Questions & answers Ask a question Q: I understand income tax must now be withheld from my (Federal) pension. I currently pay estimated state income taxes on a quarterly basis. Must I now have monthly tax withheld from my pension check or can I continue paying estimated tax?A: Download and fill out a copy of the form CT-W4P. Based on your marital status and projected income, you will choose a letter designation. That should be sent on to the Federal Department that is paying your pension. They calculate the appropriate withholding, although you can request more or less be taken out. According to DRS regulations, if there is not one on file, they are supposed to withhold 6.99%, essentially the highest tax rate. Many payers, including sophisticated ones, have been late in complying with this new regulation (1/1/18), and haven't yet figured it out.
